May’s Third Tuesday Social Media Meetup is in SJ this month at the Happinez Wine Bar on the 20th at 7 pm.

Last week, Third Tuesday held it’s third meeting in Moncton. Dan Martell and crew did an amazing job with promoting the event and we had a whopping attendance of approx. 120 attendees. The crowd was diverse with people from IT, marketing, business, tourism, health, and entrepreneurs. I would have to say that studio 700 was a fabulous venue.

We were fortunate to have a couple of mentions in the TJ and T&T over the last couple of weeks. Although I have to admit, that I find the mix of cybersocials and Third Tuesday in one article a little odd. However, it’s good news for everyone in the IT industry that there is more involvement and participation from all fronts. I’d also like to make sure that David Alston from radian6 is credited as the co-founder of the Third Tuesday NB group.  And I feel a need to qualify my old boy’s club statement from the article;) I was referring to how social media breaks down barriers like those that exist in the “old boy’s club”. That we can communicate with everyone on the same field from IT to business leaders to media moguls. Those of you participating understand how rich the collaboration is within social media.

Sorry for the hiatus lately. A slew of illness, work and life threw a wrench in things for a bit. But I’ve spent the last few weeks getting caught up on what’s going on in the Social Media space and now it’s time to get back to blogging.

It’s time for our next Third Tuesday Social Media Meetup. This time it’s going to be really big and Dan Martell from Spheric is leading the charge drumming up enthusiasm from every corner of the web. For the first time I’ll be doing a demo of WalkingSpree and I’m looking forward to showing an example of a commercial niche private social networking site. We have a great group of presenters and this will be a group of people with the cutting edge information on what is happening on the online media space. You definitely need to be there.

That’s what Jason Falls told approximately 30 people this past week for our first NB Third Tuesday Social Media Meetup. Visitors came from Nova Scotia and in NB from Saint John, Moncton, Woodstock and Fredericton all came to take online social networking offline. The event was generously sponsored by radian6 who arranged to have Jason Falls speak on his work in Social Media.

Attendees came from a wide variety of backgrounds from those with no experience in Social Media to those who work in it daily. But what brought everyone together was put best by Susan Nind from Insights Atlantic:

If Social Media is about transparency and honesty, then for New Brunswickers it’s something that we come by easily. I think that in NB we can create the wave and not just ride the wave. And I’m excited to be part of that.

Susan’s comment seemed to affect everyone the same way. So simple, yet so true.

There was a continuous buzz of conversation before the talks started. The same thread in nearly all the conversations was that people were interested in social media. They wanted to know more about it. How can they use it in their companies? What are the advantages to using social media? How is social media changing branding and marketing in business? Do you know what people are saying about your business? Jason Falls was able to show us some real life applications using social media with his Robbie Gordon twitter tracker campaign.

Considering it was 11 pm (with a start time of 7:30 pm) before we wrapped up completely, it was obvious that we have many topics to discuss in our upcoming meetings.

If you haven’t already, please join our Third Tuesday Social Media Meetup group so you can be notified of upcoming events. We have some great ideas and speakers in mind that will be entertaining and educational. We also would really like feedback from you about what you would like to see and learn.

Social media is growing. As Jason said just by learning and pushing to know more about social media, you’re all experts. NB may be small but there’s a ripple effect happening here and the end result will be a powerful social media wave.

Thanks to David Alston at radian6, we’re having our first Third Tuesday (actually being held on Wednesday) Social Media Meetup in Fredericton (January 9th, 7:00 pm).  Jason Falls, Social Media Explorer from Kentucky is in town next week and we’ll have the opportunity to talk with him.

Jason is definitely a pioneer when it comes to social media. If you are on Twitter you would probably be aware of his social media experiment with Robby Gordon’s Baha1000 race. Not only is Jason extremely knowledgeable in the use of social media but his posts are very entertaining. He has a great sense of humour and uses it to convey his points on a regular basis. It promises to be a great evening of sharing, stories and networking. Make sure to RSVP and bring along a guest.

As I mentioned in my previous post, this year is about making connections in real life. So let’s start off the New Year right.
