Podcamp Halifax

Sunday, January 25th, Halifax will be hosting the first podcamp east of Montreal. This is exciting news as podcamp Toronto and podcamp Montreal have been very successful.

Not sure what podcamp is?

From the podcamp wiki page:

A PodCamp is a usually free BarCamp-style community UnConference for new media enthusiasts and professionals including bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers, social networkers, and anyone curious about new media. The first PodCamp was held September 8-10, 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts. PodCamps are now being held worldwide.

PodCamp isn’t just about podcasting! If you’re interested in blogging, social media, social networking, podcasting, video on the net, if you’re a podsafe musician (or want to be), or just someone curious about new media, then please join us — and bring a friend or colleague.

More details to follow as they become available.

Everything Twitter: Atlantic Canada Style

NB, NF, NS, PEI, Saint John, ThinkNB, fredericton, moncton, social media, twitter 4 Comments »

If you’re like me and want to follow the local conversations (Atlantic Canada) on twitter, then this post is for you. These resources will help you find out the local buzz and help you find new and interesting people on twitter in your area to follow.

Giles Crouch from mediabadger posted a tweet yesterday saying that social media usage had increased in the past year in Atlantic Canada.

I’m hoping he will share the results via his blog as I’m absolutely sure there has been an increase and I think we can attribute a great deal of that to twitter (and facebook). Twitter acts as a central hub for all the connections. Sharing and distributing information.

Note: If you have no idea what Twitter is or how to use it, this post may be confusing. I suggest you check out Twitter in plain english first.

NB Tweeters

We’re very excited to announce that Third Tuesday NB is in the midst of creating a page off the TTNB site (not available yet), that will display all NB tweeters. To get this list started, we’d like you fill out the form info if you live in NB and are on twitter. This will help us be in creating a NB Twitter community. If you need to edit your entry, you can view the NB Twitter list.

Once the list is compiled we will place it off the Third TuesdayNB site.

A big thanks to Andrew Foster and Dan Martell for heading this up.

In the meantime, here are some resources for you to reach out and tweet someone in your area.

Twitter Local

Twitter local has a great feature that will show you tweets and top tweeters (ranked only based on # tweets in the past 24 hrs) that are city keyword area related within a specific mile radius of your city.

Just plugging in a couple here for viewing, but you can fill out your area and specifics.

Fredericton (20 mile radius)

Saint John (20 mile radius)

Moncton (20 mile radius)

Twellow

Twellow lets you search by area or topic and gives you a list of tweeters with summaries about who they are, how many they follow and what types of topics they tweet about. Some locations to get you started.

Fredericton

Saint John

Moncton

Twitter Search

If you haven’t used twitter search yet and realized the benefits of subscribing to the RSS feed for a search term, now’s your chance. These searches pull every tweet that has these keywords in it.

Atlantic Canada

Maritimes

Fredericton

Saint John

Moncton

Miramichi

Nova Scotia

Halifax

Prince Edward Island

Charlottetown

Various metrics for “evaluating” yourself/followers in twitter.

I think these are subjective for the most part as there isn’t a set standard for how rankings are created, nor do I think that it necessarily means that a high rank equals high quality tweets. Many of them are based off how often you retweet, outbound links, profile views, follower/followers ratios and so on.

Twitter Grader - Ranks tweeters and suggests others to follow. Shows rankings for area, ie. Fredericton is defaulted in the link.

Twinfluence - Breaks down your Reach, Velocity and Social Capital.

Follow Cost - how often do they tweet, too frequently? Not enough?

Qwitter - find out when someone stops following you. Lets you know the post you just posted prior to them leaving. Note: this is often a way to find out that in fact you weren’t following them and they’re just cleaning up their list because you weren’t following them. It’s not necessarily a result of your tweet.

Twitter Stats - not for evaluating, but a useful tool. If you’re curious about how many tweets you post in a day or per hour. Or who do you reply/tweet to the most. I tend to tweet more in the mornings and evenings.

Keeping your Startup afloat during a Recession

Recession, marketing, startup 2 Comments »

The big topic lately is how the economy is affecting startups. I’ve been following many of the threads. On the one hand it is upsetting to see TechCrunch’s running list of layoffs, loss, cutbacks and deadpools. However, as some have said, some of the best innovation emerges during times of economic recession.

There are some excellent posts from Canadian bloggers, that have been bringing advice and discussion on this topic.

I would love to hear from some Atlantic Canadian bloggers their perspective on what is happening.

“In these types of selling environments, you need a hard, quantifiable value proposition for your company and product. Don’t be a vitamin, be a painkiller. Be something your customer absolutely needs. Whereever possible, quantify the value that you are providing.”

Buckle Down but Keep Innovating

With development and distribution costs low, the landscape for new services should hopefully remain fertile. Entrepreneurs may have to buckle down but there is no reason why they should disappear.”

Seasonal Blogging, Startups and Work/life balance

Uncategorized 5 Comments »

So as I mentioned previously, I’ve been away since May and now I’m back more or less. Many of my colleagues/friends have been wondering why I wasn’t blogging anymore. Initially my response was always that I didn’t have the time, or rather didn’t make the time for it. That is true, to a degree, but after more thought, realized it went much deeper. This post may veer into the personal life side of things, but also brings together some components of life in a startup.

My life mostly consists of my work, my kids and then any extra time after that is prioritized. I recognize a pattern now that once the nice weather hits and the school year ends, I’m outside hiking/geocaching/biking/camping, etc. in any of the spare time I have. When the school year for the kids resumes and the weather starts to turn a bit cooler, I’m inside more and suddenly finding some time to blog more again. So, I’m a bit of a seasonal blogger, at least until more of my time frees up in the warmer months.

There’s also no doubt that being a single Mom also significantly affects my time. A single Mom, in a startup at that, is probably veering on insanity;)

This leads to life in a startup. I often hear from well meaning friends that they worry I work too much. I do work a lot, and while I am often tired, I love my work. Passion for work is not just a cliche, it’s how I feel about what I do every day. Our company is growing rapidly. We have the best clients to work with. We’ve had members ask if they can come work for us because they love their experience with us. By the way, we’re hiring customer service reps and sales managers. We just recently launched our new blog as a way to provide walking tips to everyone and an additional means to communicate with our members. Every day is a new opportunity and I wouldn’t trade this ride for anything.

Recently Jason Calcanis of Mahalo.com was criticized in his post The Startup Depression. Critics said he was advocating firing anyone who wasn’t a workaholic, but what he was really saying was that it takes great excellent commitment and passion to build a highly successful company. I resonated with his post and his comments in the youtube videos below.

So what this all means is that I’ll likely post a bit more regularly now. We’ll see what happens next May;)
